About National Defence Academy (NDA)/NA Course

The Candidates who are willing to join Indian armed forces as an officer after 10+2 can apply for the NDA exam.

NDA (National defense Academy/ Naval Academy) exam is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Twice In a year for the recruitment of officers in the Indian ArmyIndian Navy, and Indian Air force.

  1. Written Test
  2. SSB(Service Selection Board) Interviews
  3. Medical Examination

Age Limit: The age of the candidate should be between 16⅟2 and 19 years.

Educational Qualification: There is different educational qualification required for the Indian Army and Indian Navy and Indian Air force.

For Army Wing of National defense Academy: Candidates who have passed 10+2 in any stream(Science, Commerce, Arts). Appearing candidates can also apply.

For Navy and Air force Wing of National defence Academy:

Candidates who have passed 10+2 with science stream. Appearing candidates can also apply.

Commerce and Arts students can not apply for Navy and air force through NDA Exam.

Examination Pattern and Syllabus :

There is three Step selection process.

  1. Written Test
  2. SSB(Service Selection Board) Interviews
  3. Medical Examination


NDA Written Test: 900 Marks

The Written Test for NDA is a bit complicated because of its pattern.
It is divided into two parts, Paper 1st, and paper 2nd.

Paper 1st is all about Math’s and it generally covers the topics of math’s you studied in 11th and 12th class like probability Trigonometry etc. and it consists 120 questions carrying 2⅟2 marks for each(Total 300 Marks)

Paper 2nd is divided into two parts, Part-A and Part-B. Part-A having 50 questions of English Language carry 4 marks for each (Total 200 Marks), and Part -B Consist 100 question of Physics(25), General Studies (50) and roughly 25 questions of Biology and chemistry. Thus making Part-B section of 600 Marks.

Now what the Tricky part- There is a Special Rule of Cut off in the NDA exam which changes the whole game plan. There is a separate cut off for paper 1st which is maths. If you don’t clear the cut off of Paper 1st then UPSC is not going to check your Paper-2nd Beside this, You have to score 33% in English language paper. That’s mean you have to score at least 66 marks in English language paper. Now, once candidates clear the Cut off marks of Math’s paper and English paper, UPSC create a final merit list. If you find your Roll number in this List, Congratulations you have cracked the NDA.
